Bangalore's rich history

The Rich History of Bangalore: From Ancient Origins to Modern Metropolis

Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, has a fascinating history spanning over 500 years. From its humble beginnings as a small settlement to its current status as India's tech capital, Bangalore has evolved significantly.

Ancient Origins (900 AD)

The earliest recorded history of Bangalore dates back to the 9th century when it was a small settlement called "Bengaluru." The name is derived from the Kannada phrase "Benda Kalooru," meaning "town of boiled beans."

Vijayanagara Empire (1537-1638)

In the 16th century, Bangalore became a part of the Vijayanagara Empire under the rule of Kempegowda, a feudatory chieftain. Kempegowda built the city's foundation, constructing forts, temples, and roads.

Mysore Kingdom (1638-1799)

After the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, Bangalore came under the rule of the Mysore Kingdom. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, the rulers of Mysore, modernized the city, building infrastructure and promoting trade.

British Era (1799-1947)

In 1799, the British East India Company captured Bangalore from Tipu Sultan. The British established the Cantonment area, introducing Western education, law, and governance.

Post-Independence (1947-Present)

After India's independence, Bangalore experienced rapid growth, driven by the establishment of the Indian Institute of Science (1909) and the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (1940). The city's IT industry boom in the 1990s transformed Bangalore into the Silicon Valley of India.
